Job Description
Description The Clinical Pharmacy Informatics Analyst (CPIA) is responsible to participate in the planning, development, education, implementation, evaluation, and maintenance, optimization, and support of assigned Clinical Analytic Systems across the enterprise. The CPIA develops and helps to maintain the electronic medical system, software applications and databases for Pharmacy and its associated clinics. S/he develops an understanding of the application functionality, reporting capabilities,interfacing and integration associated with clinical applications assigned. The CPIA participates on the Business Intelligence and Clinical Analytics Team, establishing teamwork through appropriate deployment and documentation of processes, technical specifications, and human resources in collaboration with the Bear Institute and Clinical Analysts and assigned Project Coordinators to work on enhancements, new implementations, interfaces, troubleshooting, etc. The CPIA functions as a leader for assigned application(s) and is accountable for the ongoing optimization of the application(s). The CPIA is also responsible for maintaining and updating all of the Pharmacy department's medication-related software and technology, to include Cerner PharmNet. The CPIA oversees all Pharmacy software and technology at all levels of services, utilizes clinical knowledge and professional judgment to ensure that hospital systems, automation technology, and procedures are up to date and maintained as described by departmental and institutional policies as well as by regulatory bodies. The position requires coordinating quality services, with Clinical Services of the Pharmacy Department, in efforts to integrate, implement, and develop information technology procedures, policies, and protocols. The CPIA is responsible for meeting with other hospital departments to assist with decision support analysis as well as the creation and maintenance of the pharmacy technology plan. The CPIA must comply with current departmental and institutional policies as well as regulations set aside by regulatory bodies (i.e. The Food and Drug Administration, Drug Enforcement Administration, Department of Health, The Joint Commission). The CPIA is responsible for attending regular committee meetings and mandatory staff meetings and will serve as the subject matter expert for the Pharmacy technology platforms.
Qualifications Minimum Education
Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or equivalent experience (Required)

Minimum Work Experience
5 years PGY2 residency in clinical informatics highly preferred. 2-3 years of clinical informatics experience preferred. Background in pharmacy automation, pharmacy computer system applications, or information technology experience highly preferred. (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge

Functional Accountabilities
Clinical Staff Training and Educational Services
  • Collaborate in development and distribution of newsletters and educational material for clinical staff.
  • Provide education to clinical staff regarding Management Information System's clinical applications.
  • Assist in orientation of Information Technology Department employees.
  • Provide cross-training for other members of the IT SERVICES staff with regard to clinical information systems.
  • Offer to provide nursing informatics education in nursing and informatics environments.
  • Participate in hospital committees as requested.
  • Design and implement educational and clinical services programs; support end-user training.
  • Promotes effective communication concerning medication use applications. Assumes responsibility for the timely dissemination of information as related to pharmacy automation and technology. Participates as a member of interdepartmental committees when requested and imparts knowledge related to pharmacy automation and technology. Actively participates in the development, prioritization, and determination of core clinical decision-support systems.
  • Participates in the orientation, education, and mentoring of new staff (i.e. pharmacists, pharmacy residents, nurses, pharmacy technicians, etc.) as needed.
Workflow Clinical Process
  • Identify workflow process in inpatient and outpatient areas.
  • Document and analyze workflow processes.
  • Optimize applications to support clinical processes.
  • Assist with application implementation and system customization including the development of alerts/hard stops, data integration, order generation, automation of document entry and enforcement of adherence to workflows.
  • Interpret, modify, analyze and design clinical systems, data and information.
  • Facilitate clinical content team - work with physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other health care professionals to evaluate current EMR functionality and develop future applications by building consensus and using efficient decision-making processes.
  • Recommends innovative ideas, processes, and/or procedures for enhancements, additions, and modifications to improve existing systems.
  • Assist with the configuration and setup of new users within the clinical systems as they relate to the EHR.
  • Researches patient data across multiple applications to resolve discrepancies and/or improve work flow.
  • Partners with clinicians to identify and facilitate advanced clinical decision support implementation within the electronic medical record in order to meet clinical goals.
  • Responsible for order set management: Development and maintenance of overall principles for safe design and use of order sets, with a focus on medications. Development and maintenance of standard order set clinical content, standards, patient safety principles, and evidence based practice guidelines.
Clinical System Application Testing
  • Lead/coordinate the transition to live environment of appropriate clinical applications.
  • Provide Manager and Director of Clinical Informatics with updates regarding the project status, needs, and issues.
  • Works in the build, implementation, integration, and maintenance of automation and technology to assure safe and appropriate use of medications. Assures appropriate testing of all integrated applications.
  • Participates in functional testing for human factors issues before and after system upgrades and improvements.
Problem Solve
  • Assist clinical staff to identify cause and solution to computer issues.
  • Seek feedback from clinical users.
  • Provide technical support, diagnosis of application errors and troubleshooting with system issues.
  • Serves as a resource person for daily operational issues within the electronic health record.
  • Work with other members of the team to implement solutions to system related problems to minimize operational impact.
IT Best Practices
  • Actively participate in the Department's ITIL processes; effectively use the Remedy system for installed aspects of the CNMC ITIL implementation.
  • Participate in the Incident Management process; proactively work to resolve Incidents and meet service requests; document relevant data on requests and resolutions in agreed upon timeframes.
  • Escalate incidents according to procedures; convert incidents to change requests as needed.
  • Participate in the Change Control process; complete change tasks and update them with relevant information and status changes.
  • Monitor and report quality data as related to the EHR and clinical software applications.

  • Participates in research activities related to the advancement of pharmaceutical care. Provides support for pharmacy residency research activities. Provides support to medical staff and allied health professionals for drug utilization data gathering and analysis. Supports drug data analysis for Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee activities. Provides support for internal audits, billing and financial analysis.
  • Designs and implements quality improvement changes to the organization's medication-use system. Conducts practice-related projects, clinical research, or pharmacy CQI initiatives using effective project management skills. Reviews protocols, orders, and policies as requested. Reviews, evaluates, and discusses the results of investigations of pharmacy informatics/practice-related issues.
  • Participates in quality projects and on assigned committees to provide expertise on using the clinical information system to achieve goals. In conjunction with the pharmacy leadership team, provides assistance to the institution's committees and clinical leaders to ensure that medication-related systems support interoperability and transportability of clinical information while maintaining patient safety and confidentiality.
