I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:
Founded in 1824, the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences is the 11th oldest medical school in the United States and holds the distinction of being the first in the nation's capital. Known for its pioneering approach to medical education, GW SMHS has expanded its influence to encompass a broad range of highly-ranked programs in health and biomedical sciences.

The Director of Financial Reporting & Analysis is a pivotal management role responsible for overseeing the financial operations at SMHS. This position supports the Assistant Dean for Finance, Planning, and Fiscal Operations and plays a critical role in budget consolidation, analysis, forecasting, and strategic financial planning. The Director is instrumental in enhancing financial status through detailed analysis, identifying trends, and implementing strategic actions that influence decision-making processes across the university.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Direct and oversee daily fiscal operations, including budget formulation, financial forecasting, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards.
  • Develop and manage the annual operating budget and multi-year financial plans, preparing detailed documentation and presentations for senior management.
  • Implement and continuously refine financial policies, processes, and systems to optimize the school's budget management.
  • Conduct rigorous analysis of budget variances, pinpoint underlying causes, and recommend effective solutions to address financial discrepancies.
  • Lead the design and maintenance of financial databases and software tools for robust budget reporting and forecasting.
  • Provide expert financial modeling support for special projects and academic initiatives, helping to shape the financial strategy of academic units.
  • Offer in-depth profitability analysis of various programs, aiding in strategic decision-making and resource allocation.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial data submitted by various academic units, enhancing transparency and accountability.
  • Regularly develop and present comprehensive financial reports, providing actionable insights through trend analysis and variance explanations.
Management Responsibilities:
  • Lead and develop a team of financial professionals, setting clear goals and expectations, providing regular feedback, and managing performance.
  • Drive recruitment and training efforts to build a high-performing financial team aligned with the strategic needs of SMHS.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 8 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 6 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Direct experience in financial statement reporting and analysis, preferably within an academic medicine setting.
  • Strong accounting skills complemented by a proven analytical acumen and the ability to thrive in a dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency in utilizing advanced financial tools and models, such as Tableau, Cognos, and Thoughtspot.
  • In-depth knowledge of complex chart of accounts, with a track record of managing detailed financial data effectively.
Typical Hiring Range Commensurate with Experience.
