General Responsibilities
Position assists the Associate Director, Howard PRIDE Program with coordinating the Black male leadership program. Responsible for providing case management, and academic, career, retention and financial aid/literacy advising to students. Assists with the development and implementation of program activities, tutoring, and various workshops designed to support academically diverse program students. Position conducts leadership and development workshops and special programs related to academic and cultural success strategies.
Work Performed
  • Provide academic advising, and facilitate programs and support services to enhance student retention and persistence through graduation for the targeted population.
  • Develop recruitment initiatives to expand awareness about the Howard P.R.I.D.E. program and benefits offered at Howard Community College to the targeted population.
  • Represent HCC at recruitment activities at designated high schools, community-based organizations, college nights, and other special events.
  • Assist in developing, collaborating, and coordinating programming for events.
  • Collaborate with Assistant Director and PROD staff in compiling data regarding retention of students served term to term, assessment of programs and services, and outcome evaluation.
  • Serve as a student advocate for enhancing student learning, college awareness of diverse cultures, and student development.
  • Work collaboratively with other individuals and all campus units in achieving the goals and objectives of the Howard P.R.I.D.E. program and the college. Performs monitoring, tracking, and follow-up procedures.
  • Refers students to appropriate resources.
  • Prepares reports and summaries for Assistant Director.
  • Serves on college committees; attends Academic Support Services meetings.
  • Provides general support to the Academic Support Services area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education Required Master's degree
Minimum Number of Years Experience Required 2
Other Knowledge Required
* Master's degree in Student Services, Education, History, Mathematics or other related field.
* At least two years of experience working in a related advising, retention, or counseling position within a college setting.
* Higher Education or community college experience preferred
* Knowledge of current student success strategies.
* Experience working with diverse populations.
* Excellent oral, writing, organization, and interpersonal skills to work with students, faculty, and staff.
* Experience with MS Office software packages and email.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
* Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
* Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
* Regular attendance is a requirement of this job.
* May need to work evening and weekend hours as needed and for special events.
* Performs all duties while considering the impact of any actions on the college's sustainability initiatives in the areas of environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic prosperity.

As a participating member of the Maryland Retirement and Pension System, HCC offers two retirement options: The Pension, which requires a 7% employee contribution and The ORP, a 403(b) with a 7.25% employer contribution only. Employees in positions that do not require a bachelor's degree must participate in The Pension. Employees that possess a bachelor's degree and hold professional positions that require a bachelor's degree may choose to participate in either The Pension or The ORP.
