WGL - Sr Benefits Specialist

Position Summary
Responsible for administration of WGL's benefits programs, including health and welfare, Retirement and Pension.The Leave Administrator serves as the primary liaison with employees, vendors, Benefits, Payroll, and Occupational Health to oversee and administer leaves of absence, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws, including Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) and all enterprise leave of absence policies.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Partner with HR Business Partners on educational needs for field and operations managers on the interaction of leave laws with FMLA, short-term and long-term disability benefits.

  • Provide instruction on appropriate procedures for leave. Coordinate with HR Business Partners and Managers regarding intermittent and reduced-schedule leave usage, opportunities for ADA or other accommodations, medical second opinions, and communications with employees and managers.

  • Prepare and continually update communication materials, including presentations, process documentation, and communication for company communication channels. Provide leave education through multiple channels (i.e. webinars, department meetings).

  • Ensure paid time off policies incorporate any leave of absence requirements. Drafts and/or recommends revisions to company leave policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

  • Evaluate, ensure compliance with, and provide consultation on compliance on leave-related issues (FMLA, State and Province Leave laws.). Escalate concerns as appropriate.

  • Execute new requirements due to changing regulations. Provide guidance in interpreting leave policies and federal and state leave laws for employees, managers and HR Business Partners.

  • Oversee and manage workload within the Benefits Team, ensuring delivery of results. Manage workflow to ensure all leave transactions are processed accurately and timely.

  • Ensure HRIS and other system data is current; partner with HRIS and Payroll teams to create reports and update leave types and related information.

  • Develop and maintain leave reporting to identify usage and trends.

  • Process and coordinate disability related claims with third party vendor.


Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

  • BA in Human Resources, Business or related field or equivalent preferred.

  • Minimum of 5years in benefit and disability administration experience and/or related education.

  • Good working knowledge of various personal computer business software applications presently used by the company, including Workday.

  • Knowledge of leave policies and laws in US (Canada knowledge is also preferred but not required).

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data provided by vendors and from corporate systems.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Outlook and internet.

  • Ability to meet numerous internal and external deadlines often under tight time constraints.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality. Aptitude for problem solving and analyzing processes.

  • Excellent written, verbal and listening skills.
