Job Description

INTRODUCTION

Under the supervision of the Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Medical Administration, the Medical Director III is responsible for, but not limited to, coordination of the daily activities of the various medical disciplines of the Unity Health Care Health Center team and serves as the liaison between Unity and the community. The Medical Director III is responsible for the daily medical services of a clinical site, including supervision of all providers working at the designated site.

MAJOR DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs patient care and physician duties.
  • Supervises providers at site and compliance with policies and procedures of Unity Health Care.
  • Works closely with Health Center Directors (HCDs) and Nurse Managers (NMs) on a number of tasks involving overall clinic management.
  • Participates in the site's leadership meetings to include the Medical Director, HCD, and NM. These meetings should be designed to promote quality of care, operational efficiency, problem-solving, etc.
  • Assists the HCD as needed for the site's All Staff meetings.
  • Conducts monthly the site's provider meetings, one of which is to include the HCD, NM, Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Medical Administration (DCMO), Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), and Vice President of Clinical Administration or designee(s).
  • Assists with identification of supply and equipment needs.
  • Coordinates provider schedule to include coverage of scheduled and unscheduled absences.
  • Serves and is an active member of the site QI team.
  • Collaborates with the HCD to improve non-medical systems procedures including registration, appointments, and patient flow.
  • Manages peer review process in accordance with protocol. Specifically, the Medical Director III is responsible for re-evaluating those charts of providers not meeting the minimum standards and providing feedback. Peer review process with discipline directors needed in some cases.
  • Collaborates to improve or maintain provider/staff/patient satisfaction, quality of care, and productivity.
  • Provides feedback to the DCMO and completes clinical aspect of annual provider evaluations. Medical Director III should receive feedback from HCD and NM with regard to non-clinical aspects (e.g. with regard to timeliness, respectfulness, and teamwork with rest of staff etc.).
  • Provides feedback to the HCD and NM with regard to staff evaluations.
  • Monitors and evaluates clinical issues related to nursing performance.
  • Orients new providers to site and serves as resource to all providers at site.
  • Contacts Discipline Director for departmental issues as they occur.
  • Conducts weekly meetings with all providers as needed; if any identified issues are not resolved by the HCD to the Medical Director's satisfaction, the Medical Director should then notify the DCMO of Medical Administration.
  • Verifies, signs, and submits all provider leave requests to the HCD for processing in accordance with the provider leave policy.
  • Participates in monthly Medical Directors' meeting and the Unity wide QI meeting.
  • Serves on committee(s) as assigned by the DCMO (e.g. P&T, Infection Prevention etc.).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a current DC License, CDS and DEA (registered in DC) registrations.
  • NP License accepted
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical School and Residency Program.
  • Board eligible or board certified in area of specialty.
  • Two (2) years of experience in an ambulatory care setting, with some contact with homeless patients preferred.
  • Managerial experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
  • Must be willing to accept "on call" duties on a regular rotation.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Strong administrative experience.
  • Experience with underserved population or other special needs populations preferred.
  • Experience in working in a nonprofit primary care ambulatory health center or the equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience in using good judgment in working with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to articulate the mission of Unity Health Care through his/her work.
  • Proven results in Project Management.

RISKS

The position involves everyday risk and discomforts, which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meetings, training rooms, and other UHC health Care Sites. The work area is adequately lit, heated, and ventilated. All medical services shall be provided according to medically accepted community standards of care. The employee shall provide evidence of a recent (within the past twelve (12) months) health assessment that includes a PPD and/or chest x-ray results.
