Overview:

The Senior Associate Legal Counsel will report to the Deputy General Counsel, Environment & Climate, Litigation, and Commercial Transactions and will be responsible for providing legal support and guidance on climate, environmental, and associated regulatory matters for Washington Gas. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of environmental law and emerging climate matters as well as experience in civil, regulatory, or administrative proceedings and appeals.

Responsibilities:

Provide legal counsel on environmental, climate, and associated regulatory and issues affecting the company's operations.

Advise on the company's compliance with environmental and climate regulations, including those related to climate and emissions.

Work closely with the Regulatory Affairs team on climate-related aspects of regulatory proceedings in Maryland, DC, and Virginia.

Develop and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including regulatory agencies and industry associations, to stay abreast of emerging legal and regulatory trends.

Provide legal support for other areas of the company's operations as needed.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:

Juris Doctorate required

Membership in good standing of at least one state bar, one of which must be in the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia

7+ years of experience practicing law with a mid- to large-size company or law firm

5+ years of experience with environmental (Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Superfund, waste management), climate (including greenhouse gases and carbon), and regulatory matters.

Demonstrated experience before contested case hearings or administrative agency appeals.

Strong knowledge of Maryland and District of Columbia legal practices and regulations.

Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Possesses the ability to be proactive.

Ability to multi-task and lead multiple efforts.

Willingness to work under tight timelines and pressure.

Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
