- First Ascent Staff Training 8/4-8/6
- First Ascent Pre-Course Prep 8/8 and 8/9
- First Ascent Wilderness Orientation (Proper) - 8/10-8/15

The purpose of this position is to assist with the First Ascent Wilderness Orientation Program. The Summer Specialist staff report to the Associate and Assistant Director for Outdoor Programs and are integral in providing and fostering an open and inclusive environment focused on customer service and experience. The Summer Specialist's primary responsibility will be to assist in planning, preparation and instructing of the First Ascent Wilderness Orientation trip.

General Expectations & Responsibilities:
1. Promote the mission of Campus Recreation and Wellness
2. Maintain knowledge of Campus Recreation Center facility rules, regulations, and policies
3. Provide leadership and customer service that maintains a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for patrons and students alike
4. Assist in the evaluation and improvement of existing operations/programs.
5. Responds to emails in a timely fashion (within 24 hours)
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

* Verbal Communication: Articulate thoughts, ideas, and instructions clearly and effectively in verbal form.
* Teamwork: Able to work collaboratively with others toward a common goal.
* Professionalism: Demonstrate personal accountability and effective work habits, e.g., time management, punctuality, integrity, reliability, responsibility, ability to learn from mistakes
* Understanding of Outdoor Programs mission and program operations
* Knowledge of outdoor experiential education and the natural environment
* Computer proficient and knowledgeable in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel applications and Google Docs.
* Ability to guide, direct, and motivate other people in an outdoor environment.
* Able to think independently, be creative and work productively in a fast paced environment.
* Proficiency in systems and procedures common to the climbing wall industry.
* Understanding of Leave No Trace principles and an ability to teach these principles to other students.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Must hold a valid First Aid/CPR/AED certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association by the first day of employment
2. Must have a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification (Required of all Trip Lead Guides)
3. Previous outdoor experience either in a guiding or instructing setting can also include personal experience.
4. Must be able to lift 50lbs
