Executive Director, Arctic Executive Steering Committee (AESC)

Work Location: Department of State, Washington, DC

Cape Fox is seeking a highly qualified Executive Director to join our team in support of the US Department of State (DOS).

Core Duties:

  • Work as a liaison between the Department of State and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), on detail and temporary placement at OSTP, in furtherance of the Department’s mission to collaborate with the interagency and internationally on Arctic matters
  • Facilitate interagency coordination efforts related to implementing the guidance and strategic priorities developed by the agencies engaged in the Arctic Executive Steering Committee (AESC), including the National Strategy for the Arctic Region (October 2022) and its Implementation Plan (October 2023)
  • Work with the Chair and Vice-Chair of the AESC and with agency points of contact to coordinate efforts with interagency partners, to collaborate with State, local, and Alaska Native tribal governments, and similar Alaska Native organizations, and to assist in carrying out the functions and duties assigned by the Department of State and the AESC
  • Provide regular reports to the Department of State and other AESC agencies on agency implementation and planning efforts for the Arctic region
  • Communicate and coordinate with the Department of State’s Office of the Ambassador-at-Large for Arctic Affairs, as appropriate

Job Requirements
  • Bachelor's or graduate degree from an accredited college or university in international law, international relations, political science, economics, history, sociology, geography, social or cultural anthropology, law, statistics, or in the humanities
  • Knowledge of U.S. Arctic policy and evolving regional geopolitics
  • Experience working alongside U.S. government representatives as a technical expert in international fora
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and interact with people at all management and support levels
  • Existing contacts in the interagency and international Arctic communities, as well as the ability to develop new ones
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing and shifting priorities
  • Excellent communication skills in English
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Preference for extensive experience in the Department of State and/or the White House coordinating interagency efforts related to Arctic matters
  • Must have the authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
  • Must have an Active Top Secret Security Clearance
